$8 billion deal, new tower will open in 2031
Singaporean construction giant Woh Hup has been awarded a multibillion-dollar contract for the construction of the massive expansion of the Marina Bay Sands (Mbs), owned by the US-based Las Vegas Sands. The overall investment of $8 billion aims to complete the works by 2030, with an official inauguration scheduled for early 2031.
The luxury development project will include a new hotel tower, casino, entertainment arena, state-of-the-art conference center and a selection of high-end restaurants. The design was entrusted to Safdie Architects, the studio led by the famous Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie. Already the author of the original three-tower structure of the Marina Bay Sands and the evocative Jewel Changi airport in Singapore, Safdie is known worldwide for iconic works such as the Habitat 67 residential complex in Montreal, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas.
The expansion rests on very solid financial foundations: MBS reported a record profit of one billion dollars in the fourth quarter of 2025. With over 36 million visitors welcomed in the last year, the complex represents an irreplaceable pillar for the city-state’s economy, contributing alone to 1.2% of Singapore’s national GDP.
