It tests candidates in subjects such as Chinese, mathematics, English
According to China’s Ministry of Education, around 12.9 million students across the country have enrolled in this year’s ‘gaokao’, which for most of them is the sole determining factor for admission to a Chinese university. The multi-day exam, which began today, tests candidates in subjects including Chinese, mathematics, English, science and humanities – total scores will be released later this month.
“It’s my first time, so I’m a little anxious,” student Zhang Xinnan said moments before entering the exam room. The Beijing boy admitted he was nervous about the essay portion of the Chinese exam, as he felt the questions had become harder to answer. However, he said that despite the nervousness, he thought he could do well, having spent the last year practicing test questions. “We learned everything we needed to know,” said Zhang, who hopes to work in the renewable energy vehicle industry.
